Delivering Quality Driver Training
Part 3: Instructional ability
The Test
The Part 3 test requires you to give two half-hour driving lessons on subjects
chosen by the examiner from 10 pre set tests. The examiner plays the role of a pupil
and whilst in that role he or she tests your ability as a driving instructor by asking
questions and making mistakes. In particular, the examiner will expect you to explain
the objectives of the driving lesson (i.e. what you hope to achieve) and give a briefing
where required, provide appropriate verbal support while on the move to aid the learning
process and to identify and deal with any faults that might occur. Your performance
for each driving lesson will be graded from 1 to 6 with grade 4 and above being a
pass. Therefore, the minimum you need to pass part 3 is a 4/4. Grade 4 is adequate,
grade 5 is good and grade 6 is excellent.
Your Training
With many training organisations part 3 training is based on the DSA pre set tests. This is a bit like picking up a pupil for the first time and telling them you are going to carry out a mock driving test. The pupil has not yet been taught to drive so it would be a point less exercise. The same goes for you as a trainee instructor, you haven't yet been trained to conduct a driving lesson so subjecting you to a pre set test would be pointless and counter productive, leaving you confused and demoralised.
That's why at scottishdrivers.co.uk we will demonstrate how to deliver a briefing, talk and prompt a pupil through, demonstrate the faults that may occur and how to apply the core competencies of Identification, Analysis and Remedial. You will then be given a program of private practice, which will then be assessed on your next session.
The DSA preset tests will only be used once you have been trained.
Part 3 training typically involves between 40 and 60 hours of training to fully prepare you for the part 3 test.
Part 3 training is paid for session by session at a rate of £30 / Hour. We believe that if our training is not up to standard we don’t deserve your continuing custom and you can walk away and spend your hard earned cash elsewhere.
