Delivering Quality Driver Training

Am I Suited to Becoming a Driving Instructor

You've seen the flashy adverts on the television, in your local newspaper and heard them on the radio but something is bothering you and you just can’t put your finger on it. Be your own boss, fully maintained car and earn £30,000 a year. Sounds too good to be true. You bet it does because it is too good to be true.

Time for a reality check, if you have thirty pupils, you have thirty bosses, because they all contribute to your earnings and you have to keep them all happy. That fully maintained car doesn’t come for nothing and whether you buy, lease or franchise it will take up a considerable chunk of that £30K earnings.  Oh yes £30K and much more is achievable but they don’t mention that is gross earnings before all your expenses are taken off.

But if you have good communication and people skills and are willing to work hard, including unsocial hours, capable of running a business and receive proper training, you can earn a good living as a driving instructor. Unfortunately, too many people who don’t have the required skills and qualities are taken in by the flashy adverts, pay their money up front and either never fully qualify as an ADI or, qualify but don’t have the skills to run a successful business and leave the industry soon after. To see if you fit the profile of someone who would be a good Instructor click this link to Raising the standards of approved driving instructors. You must be able to match or at least believe you can develop the characteristics required, if not no amount of training will turn you into a successful Driving Instructor.

So before you commit to yourself to training as a driving instructor think it through carefully. If you want to talk through what's involved in training and working as a driving instructor give Alan Rennie at scottishdrivers.co.uk a call on 0800 069 98 64 or click Here to make an email enquiry.

Alan has worked in the driver training industry for sixteen years, joining a then small but what was soon to grow into the biggest regional driving school in Scotland. He spent seven years managing an office where his responsibilities included supervising and supporting more than thirty franchised instructors and four ORDIT trainers. Much of his time was taken up training, trainee instructors, and developing the talents of newly qualified instructors. He has been on the ORDIT register for five years achieving a Grade 6 on his latest ORDIT check Test in February 2009.  He is also a DSA Registered Fleet Driver Trainer.Over the last couple of years his primary responsibilities have been in managing and co-ordinating LGV and PCV training.

In September 2009 Alan’s association with the company ended and he set up scottishdrivers.co.uk and has taken up a franchise with the AA Driving School and is back doing what he does and enjoys best, teaching people to drive. He is also, independently of the franchise continuing, to provide Quality Instructor Training throughout the central belt.

Success Stories

“After attempting to pass the part three test and failing miserably,I was recommended to do my training with Alan Rennie.

Although feeling a bit apprehensive about doing training in Musselburgh coming from Dundee my fears were soon put to rest after meeting Alan.He soon made me feel at ease and after the first session I came away with more information and helpful hints than I had previously had explained to me.

I soon successfully passed the part three and still use the teaching techniques successfully to this day, even passing my first check test on the first attempt.”
