Once you have passed your Theory and Hazard Perception Test you can apply for a practical Driving Test. The decision to book a Driving Test and when and where should be a joint one between you and your scottishdrivers.co.uk instructor. To ensure that you are fully prepared and that you are familiar with how the test is conducted, your scottishdrivers.co.uk will carry out a realistic Mock Test and provide you with a full debrief on your performance and any markings recorded on the Driving Test Report Form. If required further Mock Tests can be carried out.
On the the big day your instructor will pick you up at least an hour before your test giving you an opportunity to settle down and practise your manoeuvres. You will need to bring both parts of your licence, for the examiner to check your identity, if you don’t, the test will not proceed.
You will be asked to sign a declaration that the car is insured for the purpose of the test. The examiner will then check your eye sight by asking you to read a standard car number plate from a distance of twenty metres.
You will then be asked two show me tell me questions (For more info click on the link)
On the drive you will have the opportunity to demonstrate everything you have learned in your driving lessons. You need to show you can drive competently and safely in all kinds of driving situations. You'll be asked to do two of the three reversing manoeuvres you've practised with your instructor, and possibly make an emergency stop. To pass, you will have to complete the test with no serious faults, and you must have 15 or fewer minor errors.
Despite what you may have heard, Driving Examiners are not monsters and for the most part conduct driving tests in a friendly and professional manner. At the end of the test you will be asked if you want your instructor to sit in on the debrief. Pass or Fail, it is a good idea to have your instructor present as the last forty minutes or so will probably be nothing more than a hazy blur and you are unlikely to take much in. If you prefer, your instructor can accompany you on the test.
If you pass, the examiner will give you a pass certificate and take your provisional licence. You will receive your full licence through the post in a week or two. If, unfortunately you fail, the examiner will give you full explanation of why.
